However, I enjoyed the movie as it is a weird mix of Kafka’s The Metamorphosis meets Joel Schumacher’s Falling Down with Michael Douglas.

Poor, meek, downtrodden Henry Creedlow finally wakes up & realizes that human beings are treating him like crap. He has hallucinations during these terrible times about doing the things, and poor things they are, to the whole, insensitive human run.

This movie really doesn’t rep the credit it deserves, as it isn’t the typically visceral fare we’ve approach to interrogate from Romero. Instead, “Bruiser” is a thoughtful, sparkling, slowly paced film that forces you to search for meaning on your bear. If you’ve missed this one, definately steal it up. It is well worth your time.

On a bright sunny day in 1948, Jefferson (Mekhi Phifer) sets off down the road to go catch some fish; by the end of the movie’s opening sequnce, he is the one who’s been caught, and wrongly accused of the murder of a white shopkeeper. Racial inequality, at the time, is so pervasive in Louisiana that the white defense lawyer’s argument at Jefferson’s trial is that his client is not worthy of conviction: “You might just as soon put a hog in the ‘lectric chair as this,” he declares. Outraged by this statement, Jefferson’s godmother (Irma P. Hall) does not want her godson to die as a hog. To this end she enlists the reluctant aid of the black community’s teacher, Grant Wiggins (Don Cheadle), to teach him to “be a man.” As Grant and Jefferson get to know each other (and the viewer gets to know them both), it’s not clear which of them needs the lesson more. As in Ernest J. Gaines’s award-winning novel, the movie goes beyond the conflict between the races to explore divisions that splinter the black community: education versus religion, dark skin versus light. And, thanks to masterful performances from Cheadle and Phifer as well as a thoughtful screenplay by Amy Peacock, A Lesson Before Dying goes even further, examining what it means to be human and the responsibility a man has to himself and to his community. Originally made for HBO, this adaptation of Gaines’s novel richly deserves to be seen by a wider audience. –Larisa Lomacky Moore

This legend of a Christmas-loving dog who tries to assist Santa do his deliveries is both cute and innocent enough for young kids and hip enough for their Gen X parents. For example there’s a big line that parodies the “you’re no Jack Kennedy” drawl Lloyd Bentsen made to Dan Quayle in the 1988 VP debates. That’s going to go over the head of any kid, but they’ll be wondering why Mommy and Daddy consider it’s so droll. And that’s not the only joke snuck in for the grown ups.

With a larcenous penguin as a companion, Olive meets racy and interestingly-named characters as she heads to the North Pole to establish Christmas. This special truly deserved its Emmy nomination and will entertain both you and your kids.

A last bit of trivia: When Drew Barrymore (the convey of Olive) was in Woody Allen’s musical, “Everyone Says I Cherish You”, she was the only star in it who was able to convince Woody her singing was so dreadful that she should have a affirm double for her songs. That should acquire it all the more tantalizing when you score to hear Drew vow in “Olive, The Other Reindeer”.

How could you not fancy this tale? The title alone will fabricate you smile! But then someone got the big understanding of animating this account of a runt but mettlesome runt dog named Olive who jumps at the chance to join Santa’s team of reindeer when Blitzen is injured AND letting Drew Barrymore do the stammer of Olive. Otto Seibold and Vivian Walsh, you will fancy the movie. Or visa versa. If you have kids they will want to eye this one over and over, but do not inconvenience about it; you will not mind that one bit.

Scott Fitzgerald’s classic Jazz Age tragedy once again makes a somewhat rocky transition from page to screen in this A&E production starring Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino as the feckless Daisy. This version has Paul Rudd (the stepbrother who got the girl in Cluless) doing the honors as narrator Nick, who reintroduces his married cousin to his lavish-party-throwing neighbor Gatsby. Toby Stephens captures the heartbreaking single-mindedness of Gatsby, although not once does the phrase “old sport” seem to fall naturally from his lips. Director Robert Markowitz uses flashbacks of Daisy and Gatsby’s prewar courtship in an attempt to explain their reckless relationship, but they do little more than slow the pace of an already leisurely 93 minutes. The costumes and sets are opulent, however, and Montreal substitutes nicely for Long Island. –Kimberly Heinrichs
